Marco Tirelli

Marco Tirelli was born in Rome in 1956, where he currently lives and works.

He attended Toti Scialoja's set design course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. His relationship with the contemporary artistic and literary milieu has greatly influenced his way of viewing art as a reflection on the world and as a means of penetrating reality. Tirelli began exhibiting in the second half of the 1970s. At the end of this decade, he moved to the spaces of the former Pastificio Cerere in San Lorenzo, together with the artists of the so-called Nuova Scuola Romana. His first participation at the Venice Biennale was in 1982, in the Aperto 82 section, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and Harald Szeeman, where a one-man room was dedicated to his work. The Nineties began with an exhibition at the American Academy in Rome, where a large installation of drawings were placed in juxtaposition with some Wall Drawings by Sol LeWitt. In 1993, he took part in the XLIV Venice Biennale with a room dedicated exclusively to his work. In 2001, he presented a site-specific installation at the Fondazione Volume! in Rome in which he envisaged painting in an environmental dimension. In conjunction to his painting, Tirelli also devoted his attention to sculpture: in 2009 he realized large bronze sculptures for the Gori Collection in the Fattoria di Celle and in 2013 he created a huge installation, consisting of hundreds of drawings and sculptures, for the Italian Pavilion curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi at the LV Venice Biennale. His works are part of the collections of some of the most important national and international museums and institutions. Proteo, for example, was created In late 2018 on commission from MAXXI, and has been on display in the collection since 2019.Tirelli is a member of the “Accademia Nazionale di San Luca”, of which he will be president in 2023, and of the “Accademia dei Virtuosi del Pantheon.”

Since 1997, he has collaborated with Studio Trisorio, which presented his solo shows Marco Tirelli (2008), Di-segni (2006) and Marco Tirelli (1997).

Frequenta il corso di scenografia di Toti Scialoja all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. Il suo rapporto con il contesto artistico e letterario contemporaneo hanno molto influenzato il suo modo di vedere l’arte come riflessione sul mondo e come strumento di penetrazione della realtà. Tirelli comincia a esporre già nella seconda metà degli anni Settanta. Alla fine di questo decennio si trasferisce negli spazi dell’ex Pastificio Cerere a San Lorenzo, insieme agli artisti della cosiddetta Nuova Scuola Romana. La sua prima partecipazione alla Biennale di Venezia è del 1982, nella sezione Aperto 82, curata da Achille Bonito Oliva e Harald Szeeman, dove gli viene dedicata una sala personale. Gli anni Novanta si aprono con la mostra all’American Academy di Roma, che pone in dialogo una grande installazione di disegni con alcuni Wall Drawings di Sol LeWitt. Nel 1993 partecipa alla XLIV Biennale di Venezia con una sala personale. Nel 2001 presenta un’installazione site specific alla Fondazione Volume! di Roma, nella quale impegna la pittura in una dimensione ambientale. In parallelo alla sua attività pittorica, Tirelli si dedica anche alla scultura: è del 2009 la realizzazione di grandi sculture in bronzo per la Collezione Gori nella Fattoria di Celle e del 2013 la grandissima installazione, composta da centinaia tra disegni e sculture, realizzata per il Padiglione Italia curato da Bartolomeo Pietromarchi alla LV Biennale di Venezia. Le sue opere sono parte delle collezioni di alcuni dei più rilevanti musei ed istituzioni nazionali ed internazionali. Proteo, ad esempio, è stata realizzata alla fine del 2018 su commissione del MAXXI, ed è esposta nella collezione dal 2019. Tirelli è membro dell’Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, della quale nel 2023 sarà presidente, e dell’Accademia dei Virtuosi del Pantheon.
